Dear all,
The next STRW/SRON Galaxy Cluster Seminar is scheduled for this
Thursday, November 27th, at 13:00, in the Sentinel room at SRON
room. This time we have a guest, Luca Di Mascolo from the University of
Groningen, who will talk about:
_A resolved SZ view of the hot Universe_
The abstract of the talk can be found at the end of the email. The talk
will be advertised as a Lunch Seminar as well, but please note that it
will take place at SRON. As always, it will also be on zoom and the link
will be shared the day before. The current schedule for the seminar can
be found here:
https://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~kmigkas/clusterseminar.html
We hope to see you all there.
Cheers,
Kostas & Joshiwa
Abstract
An omnipresent feature of the "cosmic web" -- the large-scale
filamentary backbone of the Universe -- is represented by a warm/hot gas
component. This is a dominant component in the overall matter budget on
a multi-scale realm spanning from Mpc-scale intergalactic filaments, to
the intracluster medium (ICM) and the circumgalactic medium (CGM)
surrounding individual galaxies. Therefore, the study of the warm/hot
gas represents a powerful means for tracing the matter assembly in the
Universe, its thermal history, and the intertwined evolution of galaxies
clusters, and their large-scale environment.
In my talk, I will discuss how advanced (sub)millimeter facilities like
the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) have
revolutionized our perspective on the hot and ionized Universe via the
possibility of tracing the multi-faceted Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect
-- a peculiar spectral signature imprinted in the ubiquitous cosmic
microwave background by the warm/hot gas within cosmic structures.
Still, it is only with the unparalleled combination of sensitivity,
angular resolution, and spectral coverage of the Atacama Large Aperture
Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) that we will be able to conclusively
open an SZ window on the hot Universe. The EU-funded Phase 1 Design
Study for this future 50m-class facility was completed at the beginning
of this year, and I will provide an overview of its main outcomes.

Dear all,
The first STRW/SRON Galaxy Cluster Seminar of the new academic year is
scheduled for this Thursday, November 6th, at 13:00, in the CE 0.18
room. William McDonald (STRW) will present his ongoing research titled:
A short demonstration of X-ray--cross-correlations with FLAMINGO
We are looking for speakers for the next seminars, particularly November
20th and for 2026. Please let us know if you would be interested in
giving a talk. The seminar is a great opportunity for MSc/PhD students
and postdocs to advertise their research to other cluster people in
STRW/SRON beyond their group and receive valuable feedback from a wide
variety of experts.
The current schedule for the seminar can be found here:
https://home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~kmigkas/clusterseminar.html
See you all on Thursday
Cheers,
Kostas
